Bentley
Alcon’s association with the Bentley marque extends back to 1996, when contracted to design and supply bespoke high performance braking packages to a small number of Bentley Mulliner cars for a VIP customer. Working around the clock to meet strict time constraints, the exclusive brake kit was designed and manufactured, meeting all test requirements, within a matter of weeks. Since then we have been a key partner to Bentley Mulliner, supplying high performance bespoke brake systems for special vehicle projects, including armoured limousines and the Final Series editions of the Bentley Continental R coupè, and Bentley Azure convertible. In 2006 Bentley launched its Continental GT Diamond Series featuring vast but lightweight 8-piston front calipers designed specifically to clamp the world’s largest road car brake discs, ceramic items of 420mm diameter. This new and innovative caliper design, developed and delivered into small series production within a greatly compressed program, carries all of the Alcon hallmarks of responsiveness and bespoke engineering. And this brake package is now available as an option on the Continental GT Speed.

Brabus
An informal meeting back in 1990 between John Moore, founder of Alcon, and the senior management at Brabus, proved to be a pivotal moment in Alcon’s history. Since then we have manufactured and supplied discs and calipers for use across the range of high performance Mercedes road cars engineered by Brabus. Founded in 1977 by Bodo Buschmann, Brabus is renowned for its professional tuning of all Mercedes-Benz and Smart Cars. It currently builds over 7000 cars a year and has grown into one of the world's largest professional tuning companies. It is also one of the most exclusive car manufacturers in the world, building breathtaking high-performance vehicles such as the Mercedes CLS based Rocket, whose 720bhp/537kW and top speed of 227mph/366km/h, makes it the holder of the World Record for fastest 4-door saloon. Bodo Buschmann, summarises the criteria for a successful partnership, “We set and expect the highest standards of workmanship not only from our own engineers but also from our suppliers, such as Alcon. The length of our relationship clearly demonstrates Alcon’s ability to design and manufacture components of the highest performance and quality.

Land Rover
Land Rover has specified Alcon designed and manufactured brakes on its latest generation armoured Range Rover. The new armoured Range Rover has gained full type approval - rare for a vehicle of such mass - and is one of the most advanced civilian armoured vehicles in the world, capable of withstanding a broad spectrum of ballistic and grenade attacks. A new body construction, a modern engine range including a 4.4 litre V8 petrol and 3.0 litre 6-cylinder turbo diesel to provide greater on-road acceleration and speed, and pioneering suspension constitute the major changes to achieve new performance targets for the latest model. To cope with the effects of additional armoured weight, Land Rover’s chassis development partner, Prodrive, specified up-rated brakes and approached us to design and manufacture a new system. The major consideration when designing the brakes was to consistently control the speed of a vehicle weighing over four tonnes when being driven hard, as is needed in pursuit situation. Alcon is supplying 6-piston calipers, clamping on 378mm diameter x 36mm thick- vented discs for the front, while at the rear 4-piston calipers on 378mm diameter x 35mm thick discs have been specified. Nick Youdan, Land Rover's Global Armoured Vehicle Sales Manager, “Retaining Range Rover's breadth of on and off-road performance was a major aim throughout the armouring process. Within a very strict time frame, Alcon engineered a bespoke brake package capable of replicating the handling characteristics of a standard Range Rover despite the additional weight of the vehicle.”
